I know I sound like a fanboy but I can't seem to find major flaws in this series, manga wise that is. I take it for what it is, if I want to see a heart breaking anime that will make me cry for weeks, I'll go and watch Clannad.

The guy definitely made some good points. Dragon Ball has its flaws just like any other series, but people have to keep in mind that it is also considered a masterpiece for the time it was made and how it pretty much established a whole genre of anime/manga and inspired loads of other series.

I admit, it must be my fanboyism kicking in, I just don't see major flaws in the manga series.

It is a bit repetitive. The fact that main characters are wished back to life (in some cases more than once) takes away the impacts of their deaths. The complete irrelevance of some characters as the story progresses, and the lack of development and screen time (or page time) for those characters. There are many. Lack of character development as a whole, I would venture to say.

Navon, you're better off debating a YouTube kid.

I sort of agree with you, though, to be a bit more on topic.

I think some of those characters were already developed in Dragon Ball, it's that people seem to forget about Dragon Ball and focus more on Z. And I do agree about the wishing back part a bit..

Novacane for the pain

I just want to say for people nitpicking with the plot part, here's the fundamentals of what he was saying.

1. Some major threat to the earth/universe arrives on the scene. (King Piccolo, Saiyans, Frieza, Cell, Buu)
2. They display their power by blowing some things up, killing some people etc. (KP blowing up a city, Nappa doing the same, Frieza's men slaughtering Namek etc.)
3. Initial fights, go against some henchmen and generally lesser villains. First fights they do okay, villains get progressively stronger and main characters start getting killed. (KP's sons, Raditz, Saibamen and Nappa, Frieza's various henchmen, Androids 16-20, Babadi's henchmen, Roshi, Krillin etc. die, Nappa slaughters most everyone, Krillin and Vegeta fall against Frieza, Trunks against Cell, everyone against Buu).
4. Main characters fight on, display new powers of some kind not seen before this arc. (Divine water powerup, Kaioken and Spirit Bomb, SSJ, SSJ2, Fusion and 'Mystic' powerup).
5. Big final one on one fight, big final attack to finish the villain. (Goku vs KP, Goku vs Vegeta, Gohan vs Cell, Goku vs Kid Buu).
6. Dragon Balls used, repair all damage done.
7. Happy times.
8. Rinse and repeat.

That's pretty much it in a nutshell, occasionally some of those parts are skipped but whether you want to admit it or not the plots do generally follow the same formulae. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing of course but it is there.

I agree with OFG mostly though, it re-defined what Shonen battle manga was and it's influence cannot be denied. I think it does look a bit dated nowadays but it's like 20 years old so it's to be expected.

You can break down and organize just about every literary work. DB is more clear in its format since many succeeding manga and anime adopted its style.

I'm critical of DBZ because I think it's such a good series. All the points raised by the article are valid and I agree with them.

The anime has some really good high points but there are also low points where I think it could have been much better.

Since I have all the episodes in digital format then whenever I watching a bit I don't like, I simply skip it!

"Humans" in dbz aren't as weak as humans in our world. Who knows what their potential is? Think about it this way: A half human/ Half saiyan has more potential than a saiyan.
Hm, interesting. I guess in the DB world it's much easier to grow your Ki than it is to grow stronger in the real world.

Btw, hilarious Tobi avatar! From which episode is it from?
